Years back, the Okija town in Anambra state is known for her dreadful practice of human sacrifice, where many of the sacrifices were believed to have taken place – and for
scary stories about shallow graves and half-decomposed corpses. But, with the successful hosting of the
second edition of the annual Face of Okija beauty pageant at the Township Stadium two weeks ago, that negative image is gradually changing. The event hosted by a non-governmental organisation known as the Obi Jackson Foundation, turned out to be more than a beauty pageant. With the presence of top Nigerian entertainers, including A-list music artistes and stand-up comedians, such as Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Phyno, Wizkid, I Go Dye and Bovi, as well as choreographers and some Nollywood stars led by Kanayo.O.Kanayo, it was an explosive blend of culture and entertainment.

The 29 contestants filed out in colorful
traditional costumes and fielded questions in Igbo. Each contestant had
to explain elaborately to the audience the names and significance of
each item they wore or carried to the stage.
At the end of the day, Chioma Uzo, a
charming six-footer emerged winner. She displayed an unmatched knowledge
and mastery of Igbo language and culture.
Chioma took home a brand new Kia Cerato
car and an unspecified amount of cash as the award for beating 29 other
young and equally beautiful girls of Okija to win the contest. The first
runner-up, Miss Chinonso Chukwudebelu, went home with half a million
naira while the send runner-up, Miss Jennifer Agbajue, got N300,000.
