The attack on the shops of black foreigners in Durban this week reminds us the position of
foreigner in South Africa is a complex one. After decades of isolation
from the rest of the African continent, and the world, during apartheid,
South Africa finally opened up to the rest of world in 1994. But the issue still remain that, most attacks are on the black foreigners not on the white. Most often the whites are referred to as expats or expatriates while the blacks from Nigeria and most other African countries are referred to as foreigners by the south Africans. In this case now, one should say that this is no more an issue of xenophobia but that of the Afrophobia.
Shall we say that our brothers south Africans are still dwelling in the past during which they were subjected to isolation.
