In a move he said was to distance the west African country from neo-colonialism, the Gambian president yesterday declared the country an Islamic state. The tiny sliver of a country, named after the river from which British
ships once allegedly fired
cannonballs to fix its borders, joins the ranks of other Islamic Republics such as Iran and Afghanistan.
His declearation reads as follows:
cannonballs to fix its borders, joins the ranks of other Islamic Republics such as Iran and Afghanistan.
His declearation reads as follows:
"In line with the
country's religious identity and values, I proclaim Gambia as an Islamic
state, "As Muslims are the majority
in the country, the Gambia cannot afford to continue the colonial
legacy," he added.
This declaration was made on the state television on Friday.
Gambia, whose population amounts to 1.8 million comprises of 95% Muslim who dominates the minor 5% remaining religious group. The president, Yahya Jammeh made it clear that other religious groups will still be practicing without fear. But, how could they worship under a prohibitive law which mandates every one to a particular religion?.
